Appleseed

A few months back I discovered a program called Appleseed, that teaches people how to shoot and gives them the knowledge they will need to be able to shoot an expert score on the Army Qualification Targets. During the course, they say you will also hear some not-so-well known stories about our nations birth.

I’ve decided to attend the September event in Sierra Vista. It costs $70 + normal range fees + cost of food, ammo and travel. Not a bad deal at all. The $70 course fee is waived for active duty and veteran service members, women and children under 21. The only real requirements seem to be that you will need a rifle and ammo for it, and the will to learn. Recommended gear seems to be semi automatic rifles with iron sights, a GI type sling and multiple magazines – though they say any rifle/optic set up will do. Also, while this course is designed to teach you to shoot at 500 yards and beyond – I hear it actually can be completed with nothing but a 10/22 or similar – due to distance simulation with small targets.

I now have to decide: build a semi-automatic .22 for the event (LTR), buy a drop in .22 conversion for my AR, or just shoot .223?

I’m really leaning towards building an LTR as I want a semi-auto .22 anyway – have not decided between one of the Marlins or the 10/22.

Update: Here is some insight from another blogger who just recently attended an Appleseed shoot.

  • I have a few posts about my visit to the Appleseed on April 17 and 18th. For the money, I would recommend you get a Marlin 795 at Dick’s Sporting Goods ($25 rebate with Marlin no matter where you go), Tech Sights, and a $10 GI sling at a depot.

Good times… good times. I liked it so much that I will be back and I’m planning on becoming an instructor.
