Zombie Tools

Thanks to a commenter (Timmeehh) for this link. Zombie Tools. They’ve got some really kickass looking blades there. They are pricey though, so hopefully they are combat worthy. From the FAQ on their site, it sounds like its worthy enough to get the job done. I might just have to save some cash just to say I have one of these badboys.

When the Zombies Come, Part 2

It has been a week since the Zombie invasion started. You’ve defended yourself and your home against the infected but you find that you are running out of supplies, and your trips into the neighboring abandoned homes to find food and water are getting more and more dangerous. You heard an emergency broadcast on the radio stating that there was a camp of survivors at a town about 30 miles away. With no signs of life anywhere nearby and no sight nor word of an incoming rescue, you decide to grab everything you can, throw it in your vehicle; and make for the survivor camp.

You grab your zombie gun of choice, all the food and water, and load it in the truck.

In my last post in this series, I gave my opinion on which rifle I think is best suited for this situation, and many readers chimed in with theirs as well – but lets look at another aspect. The melee. Lets say that you only have 200 rounds of ammo, or that you are hoofing it and can only carry 6 mags along with your other gear. You will want to conserve as much ammo as you can – so lets talk about those situations where you are only facing one or two lurches. What do you use in this situation?

I think here I might lean towards a good machete. You don’t have to be a ninja to swing one. They will cut through zombie face like a hot butter knife through butter. Sure, a longer blade might be better, but I don’t ever see myself having a combat worthy sword on hand for anything. An axe might be ok too for the force, but you have to be more accurate getting the 4-6″ of blade surface on target. I don’t think blunt objects would work very well either. Sure you can land a kill with a good warhammer or shileighlagh but I don’t have a warhammer and my shileighlagh is just for poops and chortles.

When the Zombies Come

You wake up from your slumber, only to find the world as you knew it has been turned upside down. Most of your neighbors are not really your neighbors anymore – now they are mindless, flesh-eating, rotting corpses. Same thing happened with all your friends and family. You quickly lock and barricade all your doors and windows and then sit down on the couch to think about what you are going to do. You turn on the TV and find the same news broadcast on all channels, advising you to stay put until help arrives – do not let the infected bite, spit or breathe on you. Defend yourself if necessary.

After a few days and no rescue, you realize you were unprepared for any situation that would require you to hole up in your home. You have to go out, find food and water. You grab your rifle, and a few extra mags and head out the door…

I love the Zombie Apocalypse genre – books, movies, video games – anything to do with zombies I enjoy – and a zombie invasion is the reason I have an AR-15. Really, I’m serious. Back a few years ago when I decided I wanted an Evil Black Rifle (EBR), I started buying bits and pieces and putting the rifle together slowly. Whenever a friend, family member or acquaintance of some sort would ask why I wanted such a scary looking rifle, I replied with “for when the zombies come.” More often than not, they would just shake their head and leave or change the subject.

Think about it though, the EBR is the perfect zombie rifle. Reliable platform, quick follow up shots, can be set up for close and long range, common ammo, and simple enough to operate that even a caveman could shoot one. It really is, in my opinion the best choice for a SHTF situation. I considered the AK-47 for a while because that is the ultimate in reliability, but the EBR won out because I am more familiar with its inner workings, and the ammo seems to be easier to obtain at the moment. I think they both scare libs equally well, so I had to take the scare factor out of the equation.

So how about you? One gun only – which do you grab when the zombies come?
