Department of Education Buys Shotguns

This is a bit frightening.

Don't Buy Guns if you are Fired or Placed on Leave

You might get arrested.

Concerns about an Oregon Department of Transportation employee who purchased several guns after being placed on leave prompted law enforcement across Southern Oregon to step in.

Negotiators and a SWAT team from Medford police safely took a man — whose name wasn’t released — into protective custody Monday morning in the 500 block of Effie Street, Medford police said in a news release.

He was taken to Rogue Valley Medical Center for a mental-health evaluation.

The man recently had been placed on administrative leave from his job and was “very disgruntled,” the news release said.

ODOT Communications Director Patrick Cooney said there were administrative, personnel matters involved that limited what the department could discuss.

However, the state agency had reported concerns about the man to law enforcement agencies, who started monitoring him, officials said.

“We had concerning information regarding a personnel issue and were watching the subject,” Jackson County Sheriff Mike Winters said.

In two days, the man bought a Heckler & Koch .45-caliber universal self-loading handgun, a Walther .380-caliber handgun and an AK-47 assault rifle, Medford police Lt. Bob Hansen said. All of those firearms were purchased legally, with required record checks by the Oregon State Police.

Authorities were “extremely concerned” that the man may have been planning to retaliate against his employers, the news release said. [Full Article]

So now, apparently it is ok to arrest someone for a a crime they may or may not commit in the future? There better be something that this man did that was not in this report that caused the authorities to arrest him – otherwise he should sue the pants off of the arresting agency.

New Rifles

I am pretty sure that I will be purchasing at least one new rifle at the end of next week, just in time for the start vacation. I just don’t know what exactly. I am leaning towards a .22, because I don’t have one. Everybody should have one right? I used to have a Ruger 10/22 but it was a lemon. I know that is not usually the case with the 10/22 so its on my list of considerations. However, I think I’d rather have a Bolt Action.

But here is the problem – which one? I am pretty uneducated when it comes to many things, and .22 rifles is one of them. I sort of like what I hear about Savage .22s, and I like their price points too – but I don’t know for sure? Is there a .22 Bolt Action that is similar to or better than the 10/22 in the aspects of accuracy and amount of aftermarket parts?

I am pretty sure I would go with out optics for a while and just concentrate on using iron sights (something I’ve not done in a LONG time with rifles) so whatever I buy must have iron sights on it.

On the other hand, we have the GSG-5. I hear nothing other than how fun they are. Maybe I’ll get a bolt .22 and the GSG?

Then on my third hand, if I am able to somehow find an M1 in a shop or private sale, for the right price – I’ll just get that instead. Or what if I find a .338 Lapua for getting into long range? That would be a lot of fun too.

Also, a few weeks ago I was playing Left 4 Dead 2 on the Xbox and picked up an AK-47. I heard the sound and got nostalgic. Then I got pissed off at myself for selling my AK-47 a few years ago. Maybe I should get another one? Or how about a retro M-16 style AR?

So many desires, not enough cash. Someone help me!?

M1 Garand

I want one.

Zombie Guns

Forget the hoary arguments about the .270 versus the .30/06. If you want to get some heat going among gun owners, ask what makes for the best zombie gun. [Full Article]

I still believe that my AR-15 is the best choice for a zombie gun. Thank  SayUncle for pointing us to the article.

Burger Joint Offers Discounts to CCW Holders

I just saw the following status update on my facebook page:

As if reasonably-priced, top quality gormet burgers and excellent service were not enough… Tucson’s Monkey Burger now offers a discount to concealed carry permit holders. Please patronize this great new local business.

The restaurants website is www.MonkeyBurgerRestaurant.com. The site does not mention this anywhere that I can find, but I plan on calling them tomorrow to verify.

For you local Tucson folks, the restaurant is located at the Williams Center at Broadway and Craycroft.

Guns in National Parks

“When you are at a campfire and people are getting loud and boisterous next to you, you used to have to worry about them quieting down. Now you have to worry about when they will start shooting,” Helmke said. [Full Article]

It amazes me how paranoid some people are.

Bolt Carrier Group and Carbon Build Up

I’ve hear some folks say that carbon build up on the bolt tail is not a big deal. I don’t know, maybe it is, maybe it isn’t – but after a day of fun with my EBR; I go home and clean it. I always make sure the Bolt Carrier Group (BCG) is as clean as possible, and after a case or two of that nastiness known as Wolf ammunition, the BCG is a wreck. The biggest pain in the elbows to clean, is the bolt tail.

While browsing AR15.com I saw an advertisement for the CRT-15 Carbon Removal Tool. I wonder if it works? It is designed to remove carbon from the carrier as well as the tail.  I’ve come up with a few tricky ways to remove stubborn carbon from my BCG, but if this thing saves even 5 minutes worth of elbow grease per cleaning, I’d say the $50 is worth it.

Sabre Defense Raided by Feds

SayUncle has the scoop.

He notes that there is rumor that Sabre is one of the companies looking at acquiring the firearms portion of the Cavalry Arms business (who was raided 2 years ago and just this week surrendered their FFL.)

Update 2/18/10: Uncle has some more information on the matter.  It seems some Sabre employees were up to no good.

CavArms Surrenders FFL

Nearly two years ago BATFE agents raided CavArms and siezed roughly $500k worth of firearms along with computers and business files. To my current knowledge, no one at CavArms has been charged with anything, though they do admit to some mistakes being made. Now it seems that yesterday CavArms announced they are surrendering their FFL. It seems to me that had CavArms actually done something wrong, the BATFE would have taken the FFL.

Initially found over at WeTheArmed.com:

Two weeks shy of 2 years from the initial raid Cavalry Arms has decided to throw in the towel.  While they remain in business, they will no longer produce their lower receivers.  The product line is supposed to be picked up by another company that will continue to provide customer support and warranty service.

From the Cavalry Arms site:

2/15/2010 Press Release

Dear Friends and Loyal Customers:

As you may be aware, we have been engaged in an ongoing dispute with the ATF for the past two years. While Cavalry Arms has at all times tried its best to run a lawful and honest shop, unfortunately, some regulatory compliance mistakes were made. We have now come to the point where we feel it is in our best interest to close our FFL and to cease all firearms operations. The owner of Cavalry Arms, Shawn Nealon, has elected to leave the firearms business and concentrate on firearms accessories instead. We are currently in negotiations with another company for that company to purchase the CAV-15 product line. Rest assured that any resulting purchase agreement will address the issue of providing service and support with regard to existing CAV-15 firearm products. We will continue to manufacture quality plastic components, grow our Medical products line, and work to bring new innovations to the relevant markets. Over the next several weeks we will be conducting a wind-down of our firearms manufacturing and FFL operations. Accordingly, please do not send us any firearms for repair or replacement. Instead, such issues should be addressed to the ultimate purchaser of our assets. Due to our limited personnel resources, during this transition/operation wind-down period, the final processing and shipping of firearm receivers already in our inventory will be our first priority.

We deeply appreciate your patience and understanding and anticipate that the relevant asset purchaser will begin operations in March of 2010. We sincerely thank you for your prior and ongoing support during these troubled times and look forward to better years ahead.

Thank you,
Cavalry Arms
